Comfort Bike
A subset of the road bike category, comfort bikes are
for those who just want to enjoy riding, without the rigors of endless
training, steep mountain trails or uncomfortable aerodynamic positions.
They draw from the mountain bike design, with high handlebars and a
long wheelbase to allow the rider to sit upright, putting less weight
on their arms. This also makes the bike more stable. Comfort bikes aren’t
made for speed or handling but some feature wide mountain bike-style
tires to allow practical use on unpaved roads.
Many comfort bikes take comfort to the extreme, featuring backed seats
and other amenities. Many recumbent bikes are also considered comfort
bikes due to the comfort of the reclining position.
